Skoda Octavia driving report: It runs even longer

It is by far the bestseller in the Skoda model range. Launched in 1996 as a low-cost compact saloon, the Czech VW technology clone has become a major player in its own right within the Group with over 7.1 million units sold, especially after the introduction of the popular estate model. A model refresh was now due for the current fourth generation, which primarily brought new entry-level engines and digital updates. And in view of the impending end of the combustion engine, it will probably not be the last.

On the outside, the changes are subtle, but under the hood a lot has happened. The car is becoming more digital, with a new infotainment system that is reminiscent of VW but is user-friendly and responsive. There are also more USB-C ports and over-the-air updates. The interior continues to offer plenty of space and practical extras, while the Skoda app enables new payment functions such as parking and refueling.

The engine range will be revised, with the introduction of 1.5-liter four-cylinder engines as well as electrified hybrid versions. The power range extends from 115 hp to 265 hp for the sporty models, which are to follow later. The diesel variants remain unchanged. The new 1.5 TSI petrol engine with 115 PS proves to be an economical and smooth-running engine. Nevertheless, there is no plug-in hybrid option, which is surprising given the high proportion of fleet customers.

Nevertheless, the Octavia seems well equipped for the next few years, which could be a few more than usual due to the EU plans to phase out combustion engines by 2035. Prices for the Octavia start at 30,730 euros for the saloon, plus a 700 euro surcharge for the estate. The mild hybrid versions start at 33,330 euros, while the diesels start at 34,430 euros. (aum/fw)
