Jeep Wagoneer S: The luxury SUV pioneer reinvents itself electrically

In parallel with the all-wheel drive version of its smallest model, the Avenger 4xe, Jeep has introduced the Wagoneer S at the other end of its model range. In its American homeland, the model has been regarded as one of the creators of the first luxury SUVs since the 1960s. Six decades later, the SUV is once again taking on this pioneering role as the world's first battery-electric SUV from the off-road vehicle brand - albeit adapted to European standards in terms of size and shape. This year, the 4.89-metre-long electric vehicle will initially be launched in the USA and Canada, followed by Europe and the other markets.

The Jeep Wagoneer S is offered exclusively as a BEV with a range of over 300 miles (US cycle). It delivers 600 hp, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and develops a torque of more than 800 Nm. It is based on the large, flexible STLA Large platform, which has been adapted by the designers and engineers in terms of length, width, suspension and drivetrain and specially tailored for the Wagoneer S.

The standard, all-electric all-wheel drive is designed to ensure superior driving dynamics on the road and in different road conditions. Electric Drive Modules (EDM), developed by Stellantis, drive the front and rear wheels independently to deliver instant torque, while the Jeep-exclusive SelecTerrain traction management system offers five different driving modes: Auto, Sport, Eco, Snow, Sand.

The Jeep Wagoneer S's 3-in-1 EDMs combine the electric motor, transmission and power electronics into a single, compact unit that is both powerful and efficient. The front EDM is equipped with wheel deactivation to reduce energy consumption when cruising and optimize range.

The impressive performance features are implemented via Jeep's proprietary Selec-Terrain traction management system, which is designed to provide driving confidence and traction in all weather and road conditions. "The introduction of the all-electric Jeep Wagoneer S marks a new chapter in the history of the Jeep brand," said Antonio Filosa, CEO of the Jeep brand. "This first global electric vehicle will offer a new generation of owners an experience that is distinctly Jeep and 100% electric in every way."

Let's hope that they are spared the current pitfalls and gaps in the German public charging network. Despite the fundamentally new concept, the on-board system only works with 400 instead of 800 volts. Nevertheless, the 100 kW/h battery should be able to be charged from 20 to 80 percent in just 23 minutes - that would be pretty damn fast.

The design of the Wagoneer S remains true to the typical Jeep aesthetic, but with modern accents. The brand-typical grille with seven slits is now closed and only there for visual reasons. When approaching the vehicle, the grille is illuminated. The aerodynamic silhouette is defined by a flat windshield and a hood that curves downwards. The roofline slopes slightly towards the rear and ends in a roof spoiler. Integrated door handles and a smooth underbody ensure improved aerodynamics. The result is a cW value of 0.29, which is impressive for an SUV.

The Launch Edition, which will only be available in the USA, is characterized by dark accents. 20-inch wheels in glossy black, add-on parts in dark grey and the absence of chrome for environmental reasons characterize the exterior appearance. A panoramic sunroof rounds off the design.

Inside, the Wagoneer S offers state-of-the-art technology and luxurious comfort. The cockpit comprises four displays with a usable screen diagonal of over 45 inches, including a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch passenger touchscreen. The steering wheel is flattened at the top and bottom, and the electronic door openers can be activated with a light touch of the thumb.

In the USA in particular, the Jeep Wagoneer S comes with heated and ventilated rear seats as standard. A McIntosh audio system with 19 loudspeakers and 1,160 watts ensures first-class sound enjoyment. The seat covers are made of leather-free plastic, the headlining is made of premium microfiber suede and the carpets are made of recycled materials.

All in all, the Wagoneer S marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Jeep brand. With its combination of powerful electric mobility, luxurious design and advanced technology, it takes on the pioneering role in the all-electric SUV segment, just like its combustion engine ancestor once did.
