Skoda Superb: Bohemian grandeur

Sometimes millimeters make for maximum effects: This is the case with Skoda's new Superb saloon. At 4.91 meters, the Czech flagship stretches just 43 millimeters longer than its predecessor, is a good one and a half centimeters slimmer at 1.85 meters in width and towers around one centimeter higher. And yet the car exudes majestic size and grandeur, as stately as it is stately, the perfect chauffeur-driven limousine. However, the elegant glider still has to concede some ground to its estate car counterpart when it comes to drive systems.

This is because the plug-in hybrid version is missing from the range of modern and efficient combustion engine technology. However, the part-time electric vehicle is to follow at an unspecified "later date". For the time being, the saloon will have to make do with two TSI petrol and two TDI diesel engines, all equipped ex works with DSG automatic transmission and with outputs ranging from 150 PS (110 kW) to 265 PS (195 kW). However, this does not detract from the driving pleasure, as we discovered on our first test drives around the traditional Bohemian spa town of Karlovy Vary (formerly Karlsbad). (aum/fw)
