EU wants to impose punitive tariffs on e-cars from China

The European Commission is threatening various punitive tariffs on electric cars from China. As part of its ongoing investigation, the Commission has found "that the battery electric vehicle (BEV) value chain in China benefits from unfair subsidies", according to a press release. Contact has therefore been made with the Chinese authorities in order to find ways to "resolve the problems identified in a WTO-compatible manner". If no agreement is reached by July 4, "provisional countervailing duties" will come into force.

The individual tariffs that the Commission would apply to three selected Chinese producers are BYD, Geely and SAIC. An import duty of 17.4 percent would apply to BYD, 20 percent to Geely and 38.1 percent to the Chinese state-owned Volkswagen partner group SAIC. For other Chinese BEV manufacturers that participated in the investigation, a weighted average of 21 percent would apply, and the maximum rate of 38.1 percent for uncooperative producers. Currently, Chinese car imports are subject to a tariff of ten percent. (aum)
