Hyundai and Kia test robots

Hyundai and Kia are testing two robots developed by the Group in an office building in Seoul. The DAL-e Delivery delivers drinks to the people working there, while another robot parks the employees' vehicles.

The DAL-e Delivery can navigate independently through the building and works seamlessly with the elevator and door control system. The delivery robot determines the optimal routes in real time and has a high-resolution 11.6-inch display that clearly shows the status of the service. When an office worker orders a drink via the mobile app, the DAL-e Delivery picks it up from the café in the basement and delivers it to the office or meeting room chosen by the customer. As soon as the robot arrives at its destination, it identifies the recipient using a camera and AI-supported facial recognition technology developed by Robotics LAB, which works with 99.9% accuracy. The delivery compartment is then automatically extended to deliver the beverage.

The DAL-e Delivery can transport up to 16 coffee cups or objects weighing up to ten kilograms. The Hyundai Motor Group plans to increase the number of robots and possibly expand its range to include courier and mail delivery services in the future.

The Hyundai WIA parking robot can autonomously park vehicles weighing up to 2.2 tons at a speed of up to 1.2 meters per second. It is designed in such a way that it can move in all directions. This enables it to move vehicles into very tight parking spaces. This means that more parking spaces can be created in the same area and space utilization can be significantly improved.

When a vehicle owner wants to use their car, the parking robot picks it up from its assigned parking space and autonomously puts it back there when it returns. This is the first time that an autonomous parking robot has been commercialized in Korea. The system consists of two flat, large-scale robots that slide under a car, lift its wheels and then move it. With a height of just eleven centimetres, these robots are suitable for any vehicle. Equipped with cameras, the system precisely detects the size and position of the vehicle wheels and then lifts them. It can also use lidar sensors to register when people are in the vicinity, which increases safety and prevents accidents.

Hyundai has also developed an intelligent parking control system (Smart Parking Control System) that can control up to 50 parking robots simultaneously. This system helps the robots to move along optimal routes to efficiently distribute multiple vehicles. In the future, the system will be able to recognize and react to both vehicles parked by humans and situations in unattended parking spaces.

In the third quarter of this year, the parking robot will work with Kia and Hyundai's Automatic Charging Robot (ACR) to provide a charging service for electric vehicles. The robot transports a vehicle to the charging area, where the ACR then identifies the vehicle's license plate, checks its battery status and charges it. The ACR has a deep learning-based recognition function with which it identifies the charging port of an electric vehicle. It can automatically connect and disconnect the charging plug according to the battery status of the vehicle. Once the charging process is complete, the parking robot then returns the vehicle to its parking space. (aum)
