Yamaha Y-AMT: Faster shifting

Yamaha is presenting a new automated manual transmission that will be offered "for a range of models in the near future". With the "Y-AMT" system, the rider can choose between a manual gearbox with finger control or a fully automatic gearbox with two modes.

With the manual transmission (MT), gear changes are controlled with the index finger and thumb via two plus and minus rocker levers, without the need to operate a clutch and foot shift lever. For better control with a sportier riding style, the plus lever can also be pulled with the index finger alone to shift up and pressed to shift down, so that the thumb does not have to be removed from the handlebars. The size, position and travel of the lever have been designed so that it is ideal for a gloved hand to operate.

With the fully automatic transmission (AT), the rider can choose between two programs for different riding situations, which can be switched at any time by pressing a special thumb-operated "mode" button. "D+" offers a sporty gear change by shifting later in the rev range, "D" mode creates a smoother shift feel while maintaining low revs to maximize safety at low speeds, in city traffic and when maneuvering. The driver can also shift manually at any time in AT mode by operating the paddle shifters. (aum)
