The first E-Alfa pushes the pedal to the metal

The first battery-electric model from Alfa Romeo not only impresses with an output of 207 kW (280 hp), a top speed of 200 km/h and acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The Junior Elettrica 280, as the sportiest version of the new series, also impresses with its road holding and good behavior in fast corners, as it proved at the first presentation on the legendary test track in Balocco, Italy.

The main reason for this is its newly developed mechanical limited slip differential on the front axle. It is designed to prevent the drive wheels from spinning despite high performance. It distributes the torque supplied by the engine variably to the two front wheels. For example, if one wheel threatens to lose traction, the excess torque is transferred to the opposite drive wheel within fractions of a second. This gives the tires better grip when accelerating and cornering. The Alfa Romeo Junior is the first time this differential has been used on a purely electric vehicle with front-wheel drive.

The good performance has its price: Alfa Romeo is asking 48,500 euros for the Elettrica. The base model of the new model series with a 1.2-litre engine, 48-volt hybridization and 136 hp (100 kW) is available for just over half this price. The Junior is already available to order and the first deliveries are planned for early fall of this year. (aum)
