The MT-09 is the first Y-AMT

The recently refreshed MT-09 will be the first model that Yamaha offers with its Y-AMT automated manual transmission. The rider can change gears at the touch of a button or leave everything to the electronics. In both cases, it is quicker than with the conventional method and the rider should be able to concentrate even more on just riding. The clutch and gearshift are each operated by an electric motor; the Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT does not have the corresponding hand or foot levers. A button on the right-hand side of the handlebars can be used to switch between automatic and manual shifting while riding.

Gear changes in manual mode (MT) are made via a rocker switch at the left end of the handlebars. The rider can either use their thumb and index finger to shift up with the plus lever and down with the minus lever, or they can select one-finger operation for sportier riding. In this case, only the index finger is used to pull the plus lever to shift up and push it to shift down.

When stationary and at low speeds, the system automatically controls the clutch and transmission, making the motorcycle easier to control when starting off, maneuvering and in heavy traffic. If desired, this can also be bypassed with the rocker switch. The Y-AMT has the softer "D" mode and the more dynamic "D+" mode. The new version also has a smart key system.

The MT-09 Y-AMT will be available later this year. It costs 11,699 euros, the 35 kW version 300 euros less. In both cases, this is an additional 500 euros for the new automatic transmission. (aum)
